The artistry of teaching is something Chicanos por La Causa recognizes and celebrates with the Esperanza Awards 2015. Michelle Doherty, first grade teacher at Encanto School is one of this year’s recipients.
Growing up in Phoenix, Michelle Doherty says she always loved watching her teachers teach. With fond memories of her teachers it was always in her to teach. Facing many challenges in her life she overcame obstacles to become a teacher. Her husband and her daughter were so inspired by her they also became teachers.
Her husband, John, left a job in corporate America insurance to become a teacher. His life on the road was hard on the family and he looked at his wife’s satisfaction with life. He saw how much she loved what she was doing. He was inspired by her and the impact she was having on her students and the community.
Michael Robert, Principal of Encanto School, nominated Doherty. Robert says after 22 years of teaching she is always trying new things in her classroom. She continues to grow as an educator and is a leader on campus.
Osborn School District Superintendent, Patricia Tate supports the award. She says Michelle is good for the school, good for the district, fantastic for families and wonderful for kids.
Congratulations Michelle Doherty!
