Come explore the biology, physics, and nanotechnology of the colors of nature through the lens of art. Participants will draw, paint, create models, observe birds and insects, explore UV light, play with pigments, and use scientific tools such as microscopes. They will learn about scale in art and science, and learn how color is produced in objects such as feathers and butterfly wings. The final day of the academy will include a public exhibit of student work.

Also learn about hummingbirds and other animal pollinators, and of course, learn all about flowers ―why they exist, how pollen works, and the unique structures of flowers. Spirits will connect at the Mesa Arts Center’s annual Dìa de los Muertos Festival - a community celebration complete with a community altar, live music and performances.   

The Day of The Dead festival will also feature delicious food, a mercado featuring an assortment of Dìa de los Muertos merchandise, jewelry, arts & crafts, the Bookmans Family Activity Area, and more.  Festival admission and parking are free.

10th Annual Celebraciones de la Gente :: A Lively Celebration of the Day of the Dead October 26 & 27, 2013 See website for specific days/times Museum of Northern Arizona, 3101 N. Ft. Valley Rd., Flagstaff, az

The Museum comes to life for Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, an ancient Mesoamerican holiday held throughout Mexico, Latin America, and the Southwest. More than a dozen Flagstaff families create ofrendas (altars) to display in the Museum’s courtyard. Learn about Day of the Dead traditions and the role of Hispanics in northern Arizona’s history. Enjoy mariachi music, arts, and storytelling. Learn about migration and the blending of cultural traditions. A celebration of all people of Latino and Hispanic origin, this festival is a colorful and vibrant expression of community.
